Z + high transverse momentum jets at ATLAS (ATLAS_2022_I2077570)

Inspire | HepData | Analysis reference | arXiv:2205.02597 | submitted to JHEP

Cross-section measurements for a $Z$ boson produced in association with high-transverse-momentum jets ($p_\text{T}\geq 100$ GeV) and decaying into a charged-lepton pair ($e^+e^-$, $\mu^+\mu^-$) are presented. The measurements are performed using proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb${}^{-1}$ collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. Measurements of angular correlations between the $Z$ boson and the closest jet are performed in events with at least one jet with $p_\text{T}\geq 500$ GeV. Event topologies of particular interest are the collinear emission of a $Z$ boson in dijet events and a boosted $Z$ boson recoiling against a jet. Fiducial cross sections are compared with state-of-the-art theoretical predictions. The data are found to agree with next-to-next-to-leading-order predictions by NNLOjet and with the next-to-leading-order multi-leg generators MadGraph5_aMC@NLO and Sherpa.

Inspire | HepData | Analysis reference | ATLAS-STDM-2018-34 | arXiv:2103.10319

Fiducial and differential measurements of $W^+W^-$ production in events with at least one hadronic jet are presented. These measurements are sensitive to the properties of gauge boson self interactions and provide a test of perturbative quantum chromodynamics and the electroweak theory. The analysis is performed using proton--proton collision data collected at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb$^{-1}$. Events with exactly one oppositely charged electron-muon pair and at least one hadronic jet with a transverse momentum of $p_{\mathrm{T}}>30$ GeV and a pseudorapidity of $|\eta|<4.5$ are selected. After subtracting the background contributions and correcting for detector effects, the jet-inclusive $W^+W^-+\ge 1$ fiducial cross-section and $W^+W^-$+jets differential cross-sections with respect to several kinematic variables are measured, for the first time at the LHC. These measurements include leptonic quantities, like the lepton transverse momenta as well as the transverse mass of the $W^+W^-$ system, and also jet related observables like the leading jet transverse momentum and the jet multiplicity.

Inclusive 4-lepton cross sections at 13 TeV (ATLAS_2021_I1849535)

Inspire | HepData | Analysis reference | ATLAS-STDM-2018-30 | arXiv:2103.01918 | submitted to JHEP

Measurements of four-lepton differential and integrated fiducial cross-sections in events with two same-flavour, opposite-charge electron or muon pairs are presented. The data correspond to 139 fb$^{-1}$ of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV proton-proton collisions, collected by the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider (2015--2018). The final state has contributions from a number of interesting Standard Model processes that dominate in different four-lepton invariant mass regions, including single $Z$ boson production, Higgs boson production and on-shell $ZZ$ production, with a complex mix of interference terms, and possible contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model. The differential cross-sections include the four-lepton invariant mass inclusively, in slices of other kinematic variables, and in different lepton flavour categories. Also measured are dilepton invariant masses, transverse momenta, and angular correlation variables, in four regions of four-lepton invariant mass, each dominated by different processes. The measurements are corrected for detector effects and are compared with state-of-the-art Standard Model calculations, which are found to be consistent with the data. The $Z\to 4\ell$ branching fraction is extracted, giving a value of $\left(4.41 \pm 0.30\right) \times 10^{-6}$. Constraints on effective field theory parameters and a model based on a spontaneously broken $B-L$ gauge symmetry are also evaluated. Further reinterpretations can be performed with the provided information.

Differential cross-sections for Z + b-jets (ATLAS_2020_I1788444)

Inspire | HepData | Analysis reference | ATLAS-STDM-2017-38 | arXiv:2003.11960

This paper presents a measurement of the production cross-section of a $Z$ boson in association with $b$-jets, in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.6 fb$^{-1}$. Inclusive and differential cross-sections are measured for events containing a $Z$ boson decaying into electrons or muons and produced in association with at least one or at least two $b$-jets with transverse momentum $p_T> 20$ GeV and rapidity $|y|<2.5$. Predictions from several Monte Carlo generators based on leading-order (LO) or next-to-leading-order (NLO) matrix elements interfaced with a parton-shower simulation and testing different flavour schemes for the choice of initial-state partons are compared with measured cross-sections. The 5-flavour number scheme predictions at NLO accuracy agree better with data than 4-flavour number scheme ones. The 4-flavour number scheme predictions underestimate data in events with at least one $b$-jet. N.B.: Data correspond to average of electron and muon channel. Use LMODE=EL,MU to run on individual channels.

Z pT and Z phi* at 13 TeV (ATLAS_2019_I1768911)

Inspire | HepData | Analysis reference | ATLAS-STDM-2018-14 | arXiv:1912.02844 | Eur. Phys. J. C 80 (2020) 616

This paper describes precision measurements of the transverse momentum $p_\mathrm{T}^{\ell\ell}$ ($\ell=e,\mu$) and of the angular variable $\phi^{*}_{\eta}$ distributions of Drell-Yan lepton pairs in a mass range of 66-116 GeV. The analysis uses data from 36.1 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in 2015 and 2016. Measurements in electron-pair and muon-pair final states are performed in the same fiducial volumes, corrected for detector effects, and combined. Compared to previous measurements in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$7 and 8 TeV, this new measurement probes perturbative QCD at a higher centre-of-mass energy with a different composition of initial states. It reaches a precision of 0.2% for the normalized spectra at low values of $p_\mathrm{T}^{\ell\ell}$. The data are compared with different QCD predictions, where it is found that predictions based on resummation approaches can describe the full spectrum within uncertainties. Decay channel (e or mu) is selected by LMODE=EL,MU. The comparison is always to the combined measurement.

Z+jet at 8 TeV (ATLAS_2019_I1744201)

Inspire | HepData | Analysis reference | ATLAS-STDM-2016-11 | arXiv:1907.06728

The inclusive cross-section for jet production in association with a $Z$ boson decaying into an electron-positron pair is measured as a function of the transverse momentum and the absolute rapidity of jets using 19.9 fb$^{-1}$ of $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The measured Z+ jets cross-section is unfolded to the particle level. The cross-section is compared with state-of-the-art Standard Model calculations, including the next-to-leading-order and next-to-next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations, corrected for non-perturbative and QED radiation effects. The results of the measurements cover final-state jets with transverse momenta up to 1 TeV, and show good agreement with fixed-order calculations.

Underlying event in inclusive Z boson production (ATLAS_2019_I1736531)

Inspire | HepData | Analysis reference | ATLAS-STDM-2017-28 | arXiv:1905.09752 | Eur. Phys. J. C 79 (2019) 666

This paper presents measurements of charged-particle distributions sensitive to the properties of the underlying event in events containing a Z boson decaying into a muon pair. The data were obtained using the ATLAS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with an integrated luminosity of 3.2 fb$^{-1}$. Distributions of the charged-particle multiplicity and of the charged-particle transverse momentum are measured in regions of the azimuth defined relative to the Z boson direction. The measured distributions are compared with the predictions of various Monte Carlo generators which implement different underlying-event models. The Monte Carlo model predictions qualitatively describe the data well, but with some significant discrepancies.

WW production at 13 TeV (ATLAS_2019_I1734263)

Inspire | HepData | Analysis reference | ATLAS-STDM-2017-24 | arXiv:1905.04242

A measurement of fiducial and differential cross-sections for $W^+W^-$ production in proton--proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$13 TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $36.1$ fb$^{-1}$ is presented. Events with one electron and one muon are selected, corresponding to the decay of the diboson system as $WW\rightarrow e^{\pm}\nu\mu^{\mp}\nu$. To suppress top-quark background, events containing jets with a transverse momentum exceeding 35 GeV are not included in the measurement phase space. The fiducial cross-section, six differential distributions and the cross-section as a function of the jet-veto transverse momentum threshold are measured and compared with several theoretical predictions. Constraints on anomalous electroweak gauge boson self-interactions are also presented in the framework of a dimension-six effective field theory.

W + jets production at 8 TeV (ATLAS_2018_I1635273)

Inspire | HepData | Analysis reference | JHEP 05 (2018) 077 | doi:10.1007/JHEP05(2018)077 | arXiv:1711.03296

This paper presents a measurement of the $W$ boson production cross section and the $W^{+}/W^{-}$ cross-section ratio, both in association with jets, in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The measurement is performed in final states containing one electron and missing transverse momentum using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.2 fb$^{-1}$. Differential cross sections for events with at least one or two jets are presented for a range of observables, including jet transverse momenta and rapidities, the scalar sum of transverse momenta of the visible particles and the missing transverse momentum in the event, and the transverse momentum of the $W$ boson. For a subset of the observables, the differential cross sections of positively and negatively charged $W$ bosons are measured separately. In the cross-section ratio of $W^{+}/W^{-}$ the dominant systematic uncertainties cancel out, improving the measurement precision by up to a factor of nine. The observables and ratios selected for this paper provide valuable input for the up quark, down quark, and gluon parton distribution functions of the proton.

Measurement of $ZZ -> 4\ell$ production at 13 TeV (ATLAS_2017_I1625109)

Inspire | HepData | Analysis reference | ATLAS-STDM-2016-15 | Phys.Rev. D97 (2018) no.3, 032005 | doi:10.1103/PhysRevD.97.032005 | arXiv:1709.07703

Measurements of $ZZ$ production in the $\ell^+\ell^-\ell^{\prime +}\ell^{\prime -}$-channel in proton--proton collisions at 13 TeV center-of-mass energy at the Large Hadron Collider are presented. The data correspond to 36.1 fb${}^{-1}$ of collisions collected by the ATLAS experiment in 2015 and 2016. Here $\ell$ and $\ell^\prime$ stand for electrons or muons. Integrated and differential $ZZ\to \ell^+\ell^-\ell^{\prime +}\ell^{\prime -}$-cross sections with $Z\to\ell^+\ell^-$-candidate masses in the range of 66 GeV to 116 GeV are measured in a fiducial phase space corresponding to the detector acceptance and corrected for detector effects. The differential cross sections are presented in bins of twenty observables, including several that describe the jet activity. The integrated cross section is also extrapolated to a total phase space and to all standard model decays of $Z$ bosons with mass between 66 GeV and 116 GeV, resulting in a value of 17.3$\pm$0.9[$\pm$0.6(stat)$\pm$0.5(syst)$\pm$0.6(lumi)] pb. The measurements are found to be in good agreement with the standard model. A search for neutral triple gauge couplings is performed using the transverse momentum distribution of the leading $Z$ boson candidate. No evidence for such couplings is found and exclusion limits are set on their parameters.

$k_T$ splittings in $Z$ events at 8 TeV (ATLAS_2017_I1589844)

A measurement of the splitting scales occurring in the $k_\text{t}$ jet-clustering algorithm is presented for final states containing a $Z$ boson. The measurement is done using 20.2 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data collected at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 8$ TeV by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in 2012. The measurement is based on charged-particle track information, which is measured with excellent precision in the $p_\text{T}$ region relevant for the transition between the perturbative and the non-perturbative regimes. The data distributions are corrected for detector effects, and are found to deviate from state-of-the-art predictions in various regions of the observables. If no mode specified, will try to fill both electron and muon plots. If EL or MU is specified, only the relevant plots will be filled.

Measurements of the production cross section of a $Z$ boson in association with jets in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV are presented, using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.16 fb${}^{-1}$ collected by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider in 2015. Inclusive and differential cross sections are measured for events containing a $Z$ boson decaying to electrons or muons and produced in association with up to seven jets with $p_\text{T}>30$ GeV and $|y|<2.5$. Predictions from different Monte Carlo generators based on leading-order and next-to-leading-order matrix elements for up to two additional partons interfaced with parton shower and fixed-order predictions at next-to-leading order and next-to-next-to-leading order are compared with the measured cross sections. Good agreement within the uncertainties is observed for most of the modelled quantities, in particular with the generators which use next-to-leading-order matrix elements and the more recent next-to-next-to-leading-order fixed-order predictions.

W and Z inclusive cross sections at 7 TeV (ATLAS_2016_I1502620)

High-precision measurements by the ATLAS Collaboration are presented of inclusive $W^+\to\ell^+$, $W^-\to\ell^-$, $Z/\gamma^\ast\to\ell\ell$ ($\ell=e,\mu$) Drell-Yan production cross sections at the LHC. The data were collected in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV with an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb${}^{-1}$. Differential $W^+$ and $W^-$ cross sections are measured in a lepton pseudorapidity range $|\eta_\ell| < 2.5$. Differential $Z/\gamma^\ast$ cross sections are measured as a function of the absolute dilepton rapidity, for $|y_{\ell\ell}| < 3.6$, for three intervals of dilepton mass, $m_{\ell\ell}$, extending from 46 to 150 GeV. The integrated and differential electron- and muon-channel cross sections are combined and compared to theoretical predictions using recent sets of parton distribution functions. The data, together with the final inclusive $e^\pm p$ scattering cross-section data from H1 and ZEUS, are interpreted in a next-to-next-to-leading-order QCD analysis, and a new set of parton distribution functions, ATLAS-epWZ16, is obtained. The ratio of strange-to-light sea-quark densities in the proton is determined more accurately than in previous determinations based on collider data only, and is established to be close to unity in the sensitivity range of the data. A new measurement of the CKM matrix element $|V_{cs}|$ is also provided. N.B.: Use :LMODE to choose specify the signature decay channel directly. Default, run everything, assuming all decay modes are generated Contains Z (W): fill only Z (W) signature histograms Contains EL (MU): assume only electron (muon) decay modes are being generated.

Measurement of the $WZ$ production cross section at 13 TeV (ATLAS_2016_I1469071)

The production of $W^\pm Z$ events in proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV is measured with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The collected data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 3.2 fb${}^{-1}$ . The $W^\pm Z$ candidates are reconstructed using leptonic decays of the gauge bosons into electrons or muons. The measured inclusive cross section in the detector fiducial region for leptonic decay modes is $\sigma(W^\pm Z\to\ell^\prime\nu\ell\ell \text{fid.}) = 63.2\pm 3.2$(stat.)$\pm 2.6$(sys.)$\pm 1.5$(lumi.) fb. In comparison, the next-to-leading-order Standard Model prediction is 53.4-2.8+3.6 fb. The extrapolation of the measurement from the fiducial to the total phase space yields $\sigma(W^\pm Z\text{tot.})=50.6\pm 2.6$(stat.)$\pm 2.0$(sys.)$\pm 0.9$(th.)$\pm 1.2$(lumi.) pb, in agreement with a recent next-to-next-to-leading-order calculation of 48.2-1.0+1.1 pb. The cross section as a function of jet multiplicity is also measured, together with the charge-dependent $W^+Z$ and $W^-Z$ cross sections and their ratio. Uses SM neutrino-lepton flavour matching and a resonant shape algorithm assuming the Standard Model, to match the MC-based correction to the fiducial region applied in the paper. This routine is therefore only valid under the assumption of the Standard Model and cannot be used for BSM reinterpretation.

High-mass Drell-Yan at 8 TeV (ATLAS_2016_I1467454)

This paper presents a measurement of the double-differential cross section for the Drell-Yan $Z/\gamma^\ast \rightarrow \ell^+\ell^-$ and photon-induced $\gamma\gamma \rightarrow \ell^+\ell^-$ processes where $\ell$ is an electron or muon. The measurement is performed for invariant masses of the lepton pairs, $m_{\ell\ell}$, between 116 GeV and 1500 GeV using a sample of 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ of pp collisions data at centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 8$ TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2012. The data are presented double differentially in invariant mass and absolute dilepton rapidity as well as in invariant mass and absolute pseudorapidity separation of the lepton pair. The single-differential cross section as a function of $m_{\ell\ell}$ is also reported. The electron and muon channel measurements are combined and a total experimental precision of better than 1\% is achieved at low $m_{\ell\ell}$. A comparison to next-to-next-to-leading order perturbative QCD predictions using several recent parton distribution functions and including next-to-leading order electroweak effects indicates the potential of the data to constrain parton distribution functions. In particular, a large impact of the data on the photon PDF is demonstrated. Decay channel (e or mu) is selected by LMODE=EL,MU

Measurement of the $WZ$ production cross section at 8 TeV (ATLAS_2016_I1426523)

This paper presents measurements of $W^\pm Z$ production in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. The gauge bosons are reconstructed using their leptonic decay modes into electrons and muons. The data were collected in 2012 by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb${}^{-1}$. The measured inclusive cross section in the detector fiducial region is $\sigma(W^\pm Z\to \ell^\prime\nu\ell\ell) = 35.1\pm 0.9$(stat)$\pm 0.8$(sys)$\pm 0.8$(lumi) fb, for one leptonic decay channel. In comparison, the next-to-leading-order Standard Model expectation is $30.0\pm 2.1$ fb. Cross sections for $W^+ Z$ and $W^- Z$ production and their ratio are presented as well as differential cross sections for several kinematic observables. Limits on anomalous triple gauge boson couplings are derived from the transverse mass spectrum of the $W^\pm Z$ system. From the analysis of events with a $W$ and a $Z$ boson associated with two or more forward jets an upper limit at 95% confidence level on the $W^\pm Z$ scattering cross section of 0.63 fb, for each leptonic decay channel, is established, while the Standard Model prediction at next-to-leading order is $0.13\pm 0.01$ fb. Limits on anomalous quartic gauge boson couplings are also extracted. For distributions that include the infinity symbol ($\infty$) on the horizontal axis, the last bin will include the events from the overflow bin. Users should note that explicit matching of lepton flavour between individual SM neutrinos and charged leptons is used in this analysis routine, to match the MC-based correction to the fiducial region applied in the paper. The data are therefore only valid under the assumption of the Standard Model and cannot be used for BSM reinterpretation.

The production of $W$ boson pairs in proton--proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 8$ TeV is studied using data corresponding to 20.3 fb${}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected by the ATLAS detector during 2012 at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The $W$ bosons are reconstructed using their leptonic decays into electrons or muons and neutrinos. Events with reconstructed jets are not included in the candidate event sample. A total of 6636 $WW$ candidate events are observed. Measurements are performed in fiducial regions closely approximating the detector acceptance. The integrated measurement is corrected for all acceptance effects and for the $W$ branching fractions to leptons in order to obtain the total $WW$ production cross section, which is found to be $71.1 \pm 1.1$ (stat) ${}^{+5.7}_{-5.0}$ (syst) $\pm 1.4$ (lumi) pb. This agrees with the next-to-next-to-leading-order Standard Model prediction of $63.2 {}^{+1.6}_{-1.4}$ (scale) $\pm 1.2$ (PDF) pb. Fiducial differential cross sections are measured as a function of each of six kinematic variables. The distribution of the transverse momentum of the leading lepton is used to set limits on anomalous triple-gauge-boson couplings.

Charged-particle distributions sensitive to the properties of the underlying event are measured for an inclusive sample of events containing a $Z$-boson, decaying to an electron or muon pair. The measurement is based on data collected using the ATLAS detector at the LHC in proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV with an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb$^{-1}$. Distributions of the charged particle multiplicity and of the charged particle transverse momentum are measured in regions of azimuthal angle defined with respect to the $Z$-boson direction.

Measurements of the ratio of the production cross sections for $W$ and $Z$ bosons in association with jets in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The measurement is based on the entire 2011 dataset, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.6$\text{fb}^{-1}$. Inclusive and differential cross-section ratios for massive vector bosons decaying to electrons and muons are measured in association with jets with transverse momentum $p_\text{T} > 30$ GeV and jet rapidity $|y| < 4.4$. The default routine will pick up the electron decay channel of the heavy bosons and compare it to the combined (muon and electron channel) data. Individual channels (for data) are available as well, use ATLAS_2014_I1312627_EL and ATLAS_2014_I1312627_MU to specify the decay channel directly. NB #1: The "x01" Scatter2D objects are constructed from the ratio of "x02" to "x03" Histo1D objects. If several output yoda files are merged with yodamerge, the merged "x01" objects will become meaningless. New "x01" Scatter2Ds can easil be constructed in a postprocessing step from the merged "x02" (nominator) and "x03" (denominator) objects. NB #2: Special care ought to be taken when evaluating theoretical uncertainties due to potential cancellations/correlations between numerator and denominator.

Measurement of Z boson in association with b-jets at 7 TeV in ATLAS (electron channel) (ATLAS_2014_I1306294)

Inspire | HepData | Analysis reference | ATLAS-STDM-2012-15 | arXiv:1407.3643 | JHEP 1410 (2014) 141

Measurements of differential production cross-sections of a $Z$ boson in association with $b$-jets in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV are reported. The data analysed correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb$^{-1}$ recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Particle-level cross-sections are determined for events with a $Z$ boson decaying into an electron or muon pair, and containing $b$-jets. For events with at least one $b$-jet, the cross-section is presented as a function of the $Z$ boson transverse momentum and rapidity, together with the inclusive $b$-jet cross-section as a function of $b$-jet transverse momentum, rapidity and angular separations between the $b$-jet and the $Z$ boson. For events with at least two $b$-jets, the cross-section is determined as a function of the invariant mass and angular separation of the two highest transverse momentum $b$-jets, and as a function of the $Z$ boson transverse momentum and rapidity. Results are compared to leading-order and next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations. This Rivet module implements the event selection for Z decaying into electrons. The analysis is extended to invariant masses as low as 12 GeV in the muon channel within a fiducal region of $p_\text{T}^\text{leading} > 9$ GeV, $p_\text{T}^\text{subleading} > 6$ GeV, $|\eta| < 2.4$ with 35 $\text{pb}^{-1}$.

W + charm production at 7 TeV (ATLAS_2014_I1282447)

Inspire | HepData | Analysis reference | ATLAS-STDM-2012-14 | JHEP 1405 (2014) 068 | doi:10.1007/JHEP05(2014)068 | arXiv:1402.6263

This routine implements the measurement of $W$ boson production in association with a single charm quark with $4.6 \text{fb}^{-1}$ of $pp$ collision data at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Results are quoted for the $W$ boson production decaying into either an electron or muon and the charm quark being identified as any charmed hadron above 5 GeV inside $\Delta R = 0.4$ of a jet with more than 25 GeV. Alternatively the presence of the charm quark is indicated by the presence of a $D$ or a $D^*$ meson with a $p_\text{T}$ above 8 GeV. The cross sections are quoted for the number of opposite sign minus same sign events, where the signs under consideration are the charge of the $W$ boson and the charmed hadrons tagging the event. Given are the integrated and differential cross sections as a function of the pseudorapidity of the lepton from the $W$-boson decay are measured. Additionally, the cross-section ratios $\sigma(W^+ + bar{c}) / \sigma(W^- + c)$ as well as the $p_\text{T}$ dependent cross sections of the $D$/$D^*$ mesons normalized to the $W$ inclusive cross sections are published. The measured data is unfolded to the Born level. One should therefore take care to run on samples without QED radiation off of the electrons. IMPORTANT NOTICE --- For the MC predictions in the paper, the branching fractions to $D$ and $D^*$ mesons have been adapted to be 0.2256 ($D$) and 0.2287 ($D^*$) (LEP/HERA combination). Some suggestion on how to do post-processing -- in case separate samples for $W^+ + c$ and $W^- + c$ and inclusive $W$ are used -- are included in the cc-file. This post-processing is needed to properly display the histograms for the cross section ratio plots $\sigma(W^+ + bar{c}) / \sigma(W^- + c)$ as well as for the cross section ratios of $W + D^{(*)}$ production over inclusive $W$ production ($\sigma(W^{+/-} D^{(*)}) / \sigma(W^{+/-})$) as a function of the $D^{(*)}$ meson transverse momentum.

Measurements differential distributions for inclusive $Z$-boson-plus-dijet production are performed in five fiducial regions, each with different sensitivity to the electroweak contribution. Measured distributions include the differential cross section as a function of the dijet invariant mass, the differential cross section and a function of the dijet rapidity separation, the differential cross section as a function of the number of jets in the rapidity interval bounded by the two leading jets. Other measurements include the jet veto effiency as a function of the dijet invariant mass and rapdity separation, the normalized transverse momentum balance cut efficiency, and the average number of jets falling into the rapidity interval boundd by the two leading jets, as a function of dijet invariant mass and dijet rapidity separation.

This Letter reports a measurement of the high-mass Drell-Yan differential cross-section in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV at the LHC. Based on an integrated luminosity of 4.9 fb$^{-1}$, the differential cross-section in the $Z/\gamma^\ast \rightarrow e^+e^-$ channel is measured with the ATLAS detector as a function of the invariant mass, $m_{ee}$, in the range $116< m_{ee} <1500$ GeV, for a fiducial region in which both the electron and the positron have transverse momentum $p_\text{T}>25$ GeV and pseudorapidity $|\eta|<2.5$. A comparison is made to various event generators and to the predictions of perturbative QCD calculations at next-to-next-to-leading order.

Measurements of the production of jets of particles in association with a $Z$ boson in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV are presented, using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.6/fb collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. Inclusive and differential jet cross sections in $Z$ events, with Z decaying into electron or muon pairs, are measured for jets with transverse momentum $p_T > 30$ GeV and rapidity $|y| < 4.4$. This Rivet module implements the event selection for the weighted combination of both decay channels to produce the average cross section for a single lepton flavour, and uses the data from that combination (as in the paper plots). In the default mode this is how it will run, assuming mixed electronic and muonic events. If LMODE is set to EL (MU), the plots for the individual decay channels (with a slightly different fiducial phase space) are made.

Study of quark and gluon jet substructure in Z+jet and dijet events from pp collisions at 13 TeV (CMS_2021_I1920187)

Inspire | HepData | Analysis reference | CMS-SMP-20-010 | arXiv:2109.03340

Measurements of jet substructure describing the composition of quark- and gluon-initiated jets are presented. Proton-proton (pp) collision data at sqrt(s)=13 TeV collected with the CMS detector are used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9/fb. Generalized angularities are measured that characterize the jet substructure and distinguish quark- and gluon-initiated jets. These observables are sensitive to the distributions of transverse momenta and angular distances within a jet. The analysis is performed using a data sample of dijet events enriched in gluon-initiated jets, and, for the first time, a Z+jet event sample enriched in quark-initiated jets. The observables are measured in bins of jet transverse momentum, and as a function of the jet radius parameter. Each measurement is repeated applying a "soft drop" grooming procedure that removes soft and large angle radiation from the jet.

A measurement of the W W boson pair production cross section in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 13 TeV is presented. The data used in this study were collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb-1. The W+W- candidate events are selected by first requiring two oppositely-charged leptons (electrons or muons). Two methods for reducing background contributions are employed. In the first one, a sequence of requirements on kinematic quantities is applied allowing a measurement of the total cross section: 117.6 +/- 6.8 pb which agrees well with the theoretical cross section. Fiducial cross sections are also reported for events with zero jets or one jet, and the change in the zero-jet fiducial cross section with the jet pT threshold is measured. Normalized differential cross sections are reported within the fiducial region; these are compared to theoretical predictions based on quantum chromodynamics at next-to-next-to-leading-order accuracy. A second method for suppressing background contributions employs two random forest classifiers. The analysis based on this method includes a measurement of the total cross section and also a measurement of the normalized jet multiplicity distribution in W+W- events. Finally, a dilepton invariant mass distribution is used to probe for physics beyond the standard model in the context of an effective field theory and limits on the presence of dimension-6 operators are derived.

The data analyzed were collected in 2016 with the CMS detector at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of $35.9/fb$. The measured fiducial inclusive product of cross section and branching fraction agrees with next-to-next-to-leading order quantum chromodynamics calculations. Differential cross sections of the transverse momentum \pt, the optimized angular variable $\phi^{*}_{\eta}$, and the rapidity of lepton pairs are measured. The data are corrected for detector effects and compared to theoretical predictions using fixed order, resummed, and parton shower calculations. The uncertainties of the measured normalized cross sections are smaller than 0.5% for $\phi^{*}_{\eta} < 0.5$ and for $p_{T}^{Z} < 50 \text{GeV}$.

Differential cross section of Z boson production in association with jets in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13\,$TeV (CMS_2018_I1667854)

The production of a Z boson, decaying to two charged leptons, in association with jets in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV is measured. Data recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC are used that correspond to an integrated luminosity of 2.19$\,$fb$^{-1}$. The cross section is measured as a function of the jet multiplicity and its dependence on the transverse momentum of the Z boson, the jet kinematic variables (transverse momentum and rapidity), the scalar sum of the jet momenta, which quantifies the hadronic activity, and the balance in transverse momentum between the reconstructed jet recoil and the Z boson. The measurements are compared with predictions from four different calculations. The first two merge matrix elements with different parton multiplicities in the final state and parton showering, one of which includes one-loop corrections. The third is a fixed-order calculation with next-to-next-to-leading order accuracy for the process with a Z boson and one parton in the final state. The fourth combines the fully differential next-to-next-to-leading order calculation with next-to-next-to-leading logarithm resummation and parton showering.

The analyzed data corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $2.1 \mathrm{fb}^{-1}$. The underlying event activity is quantified in terms of charged particle multiplicity and their scalar sum of their transverse momentum in different topological regions defined with respect to the resultatnt azimuthal direction of the two muons coming from the decay of a Z-boson. The distributions are unfolded to stable charged-particle level and are compared with predictions from various simulations, as well as with the measurements at a centre-of-mass energy of $1.96 \mathrm{TeV}$ and $7 \mathrm{TeV}$ by the CDF and CMS experiments.

Measurements of differential production cross sections for a Z boson in association with jets in pp collisions at 8 TeV (CMS_2017_I1497519)

Inspire | HepData | Analysis reference | CMS-SMP-14-013 | JHEP 04 (2017) 022 | DOI:10.1007/JHEP04(2017)022 | arXiv:1611.03844

Cross sections for the production of a Z boson in association with jets in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 8\,$TeV are measured using a data sample collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC corresponding to 19.6 fb$^{-1}$. Differential cross sections are presented as functions of up to three observables that describe the jet kinematics and the jet activity. Correlations between the azimuthal directions and the rapidities of the jets and the Z boson are studied in detail. The predictions of a number of multileg generators with leading or next-to-leading order accuracy are compared with the measurements. The comparison shows the importance of including multi-parton contributions in the matrix elements and the improvement in the predictions when next-to-leading order terms are included.

Differential cross sections for a W boson produced in association with jets are measured in a data sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV recorded with the CMS detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.6 inverse femtobarns. The W bosons are identified through their decay into a muon and a neutrino. The cross sections are reported as functions of jet multiplicity, jet transverse momenta, and the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta ($H_T$) for different jet multiplicities. Distributions of the angular correlations between the jets and the muon are examined, as well as the average number of jets as a function of $H_T$ and as a function of angular variables. The cross sections are measured in the fiducial region defined by a muon with $p_T > 25$ GeV and pseudorapidity $|\eta| < 2.1$, and by a transverse mass between the muon and the missing transverse energy $M_T > 50$ GeV. Jets are reconstructed using the anti-kT algorithm with a distance parameter R = 0.5, and only jets with $p_T > 30$ GeV, $|\eta| < 2.4$, and a separation of $\Delta R > 0.5$ from the muon are considered.

Fully leptonic $WZ$ diboson production at the CMS experiment, measured inclusively at 7 and 8 TeV, and differentially at 8 TeV only (this analysis). The differential cross-sections are measured with respect to $Z$ $p_T$, leading jet $p_T$, and the jet multiplicity. This data is useful for constraining MC models of QCD and EW activity in diboson events, and for constraining anomalous couplings. NOTE: total cross-section is fixed to the measured value in this analysis, since the correction factors from fiducial to inclusive $WZ$ production were not published.

Rapidity distributions in exclusive $Z$ + jet and $\gamma$ + jet events in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV (CMS_2013_I1258128)

Rapidity distributions are presented for events containing either a $Z$ boson or a photon in association with a single jet in proton-proton collisions produced at the CERN LHC. The data, collected with the CMS detector at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV, correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5.0/fb. The individual rapidity distributions of the boson and the jet are consistent within 5\% with expectations from perturbative QCD. However, QCD predictions for the sum and the difference in rapidities of the two final-state objects show significant discrepancies with CMS data. In particular, next-to-leading-order QCD calculations, and two Monte Carlo event generators using different methods to merge matrix-element partons with evolved parton showers, appear inconsistent with the data as well as with each other.

A study of proton-proton collisions in which two $b$-hadrons are produced in association with a $Z$ boson is reported. The collisions were recorded at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC, for an integrated luminosity of 5.2/fb. The $b$-hadrons are identified by means of displaced secondary vertices, without the use of reconstructed jets, permitting the study of $b$-hadron pair production at small angular separation. Differential cross sections are presented as a function of the angular separation of the $b$-hadrons and the $Z$ boson. In addition, inclusive measurements are presented. For both the inclusive and differential studies, different ranges of $Z$ boson momentum are considered.

Measurements of the mass spectra of the jets in dijet and $W/Z$+jet events from proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV using a data sample of integrated luminosity of 5 fb$^-1$. The jets are reconstructed using the both the anti-$k_T$ algorithm with $R=0.7$ (AK7) and the Cambridge-Aachen algorithm with $R=0.8$ (CA8) and $R=1.2$ (CA12) with several grooming techniques applied (ungroomed, filtered, pruned and trimmed). Measurements are presented of event shapes and azimuthal correlations in the inclusive production of a Z boson in association with jets in proton-proton collisions. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5.0/fb, collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV. This to test perturbative QCD predictions and evaluate a substantial background to most physics channels. Studies performed as a function of jet multiplicity for inclusive $Z$ boson production and for $Z$ bosons with transverse-momenta greater than 150 GeV, are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo event generators that include leading-order multiparton matrix-element (with up to four hard partons in the final state) and next-to-leading-order simulations of Z + 1-jet events. The results are corrected for detector effects, and can therefore be used as input to improve models for describing these processes.

A measurement of the inclusive $ZZ$ production cross section and constraints on anomalous triple gauge couplings in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 8 TeV$ are presented. The analysis is based on a data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.6/fb, collected with the CMS experiment at the LHC. The measurements are performed in the leptonic decay modes $ZZ \to lll^\prime l^\prime$, where $l = e,\mu$ and $l^\prime = e, \mu, \tau$. A measurement of the underlying event activity using Drell-Yan events using muonic final state. The production of charged particles with pseudorapidity $|\eta| < 2$ and transverse momentum $p_\perp > 0.5\,\text{GeV}/c$ is studied in towards, transverse and away region w.r.t. to the direction of di-muon system. The UE activity is measured in terms of of a particle density and an energy density. The particle density is computed as the average number of primary charged particles per unit pseudorapidity and per unit azimuth. The energy density is expressed in terms of the average of the scalar sum of the transverse momenta of primary charged particles per unit pseudorapidity and azimuth. The ratio of the energy and particle density is also reported in 3 regions. UE activity is studied as a function of invariant mass of muon pair ($M_{\mu\mu}$) by limiting the ISR contribution by requiring transverse momentum of muon pair $p_\perp(\mu\mu) < 5\,\text{GeV}/c$. The $p_\perp(\mu\mu)$ dependence is studied for the events having $M_{\mu\mu}$ in window of 81--101 GeV/$c$. The normalized charged particle multiplicity and $p_\perp$ spectrum of the charged particles in three regions also been reported for events having $M_{\mu\mu}$ in window of 81--101 GeV/$c$. Multiplicity and $p_\perp$ spectra in the transverse region are also reported, for events having $p_\perp(\mu\mu) < 5\,\text{GeV}/c$.

Muons and jets are required to have transverse momentum in excess of 20 Gev, and to have a pseudorapidity between 2.0 and 4.5 for muons, and between 2.2 and 4.2 for jets. A single muon is required in the case of $W$ production, and two opposite sign muons with a combined invariant mass of between 60 and 120 GeV are required for $W$ production. The leptons and jets are required to be separated by a radius of 0.5 in ($\eta$, $\phi$) space.

Daughter electrons are required to have $p_T > 20$ GeV/$c$, $2 < \eta < 4.5$ and the dielectron invariant mass in range 60-120 GeV/$c^2$.
